Books! Long ones, short ones, large ones, small ones, leather-bound, paper back, and everything in-between. To some, they are the bane of existence. To others, they are the saviors of the human race.
Myself, I use books to further myself - to gain knowledge, to grow mentally and spiritually. While I don't read much fiction anymore as I find the majority of modern fiction to be mass-marketed trash, a good work or two has slipped through the cracks. In the interest of spreading knowledge, joy, and English comprehension, here are some of my favorite - and recommended - books.
Fiction:
Shogun by James Clavell
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
Short stories:
The Last Question by Isaac Asimov - Suggested by Luzz. Very thought-provoking.
Non-fiction:
The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the search for Meaning by Ernest Kurtz & Katherine Ketchem
John Adams by David Cullough
Benjamin Franklin: An American Life by Walter Isaacson
Man and His Symbols by Carl Jung
The Poetic Edda by Carolyne Larrington
----
As a side note, I cannot recommend The Spirituality of Imperfection highly enough to anyone wishing to understand their humanity and flaws. It doesn't come off as religious, merely spiritual, and contains many stories from throughout the world, including a running story of the creation of Alcoholics Anonymous and their philosophies. It's a wonderful book suggested to me by my grandfather, and now I suggest it to you.
----
I've got quite a long reading list currently, including the first volume of the official biography of Winston Churchill, a biography of Einstein, multiple books regarding the ancient religious practices of my ancestors, many other religious and philosophical texts (Leviathan and Utopia!), and... it's simply exhausting, and it grows daily.
Now that I'm done babbling, I'm curious as to what your favorites are. Please share, or inquire about what someone else has listed. What are books to you? _________________

My favorite book of all time is Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. It's nothing philisophical or profound really. But it's a damn good read and I've read it 6 times front to back now. Seems like you discover more about the story every time. Now if you saw the movie, you saw a jacked up shitty version of the book. They left out so many key points (including characters that were necessary to the plot) and changed almost everything the book was. In summary: The movie was complete garbage compared to the book and if you want the real, good story. Read it. ^^ |
