Post  Post subject: Bittorent Question Reply with quote

So err, like the other day my downloads were going at about an average of 500-700kb/s and now they are averaging 30-50.

I know my download limit has not yet been reached, and its not seeding and leecher issues, there is more than enough.

Could bittorent, or the site i am downloading from, be restricting how much i download? If so, would it be the program or the site? Or does it have to be my connection?

And also, any suggestions on how to boost my downloads back up to normal speed?

(Awaits Skyes reply, she seems to know her torrents :S)

probably either your connection is being shaped by your ISP, or there was a loss of peers. it happens, peers jump from sending to you to someone else in their queue, the rest stick around. it might jump back up later.

i know my isp locks people down to half their subscribed speed if they hit a threshold level during their act of "keeping 1% of those who do it from bogging down the other 99% aka we can't be arsed to update our networks to accomodate growth, so everyone suffers.

Really, it can only be two things (as arimak stated):
1) Your ISP kicked you in the groin and limited your download speeds (ouch!)
2) The seeding peer(s) that granted you such high speeds is no longer seeding to you.

Bittorrent is just a download that takes bits and pieces from different places and puts them together on your hard drive. =P You can't take many pieces of cake from someone who only has a slice of cake; but you can take a bunch from someone who has the whole cake.

=) Enjoy your silly explanation.

Thanks Skye. Hmm I dunno, speeds were constantly high for like 3 weeks and now all of a sudden it's constantly low, no matter how many seeds.

I dunno maybe it was a groinage kicking by my ISP. Thanks nonetheless Smile

You're downloading from other people.
You may have been connected to people who have higher upload limits than the people you are connected to now.

Peer to peer downloading depends more on the other person than you.
Of course you can't download more than your internet can handle.
But within that limitation, it all depends on the other people.

Most torrent peers limit their download speed to you based on your upload speed, and how much you are sharing. If you limit your own upload speed, your download speed will be throttled.

The other thing is that most torrent clients require a listening port which must be open and forwarding to your computer for it to peer properly.

Mininova, pirate bay, demonoid, dattebayo. My upload speed is on unlimited and something is wrong, because I have yet to hit a good speed even once. My friend said that the computer upstairs that my wireless is running through has probably limited my bandwidth. Stupid housemate =_=
