Well...the problem with that is....
1. It's a plain idea
2. If there are walls and such, people can walk faster
when right next to the wall (i.e. Thief classes - Assassin, Stalkers)
3. If you make it with obstacles, it's basically the maze idea.
But then again, I'm not 100% correct on #2 I think. Either way, there are
ways people can cheat unless they are stripped and skills are unable to use.

How about something like a raffle to decide events?
People make up events that are acceptable and you pick one
of them (out of luck) and that's the event!
