If hydrogen is explosive and oxygen is flamable
why does water put out fire?

The oxygen and hydrogen atoms in the water molecule are the product of previous combustion, and also water putting out fire is a physical reaction rather than a chemical one. This is because carbon is not active enough to displace the hydrogen in water; and water does not disintergrate easily due to the energy required to break the covalent bonding.

First way water extinguishes a fire is by cooling. This cooling process removes the heat from the fire. This is possible through water’s ability to absorb massive amounts of heat by converting to steam. Without the heat the fuel no longer has the conditions required to produce oxygen to sustain the fire. The second way water extinguishes a fire is by smothering the fire. When water is heated to its boiling point it converts to a gas called water vapor or steam. When this conversion takes place is dilutes the oxygen in the air. - Wikipedia, Firefighting.

i think what she means is its kinda funny that 2 atoms that react to fire in a bad way when you put them together they become something that puts fire out. 2 flamable atoms become non flamable when put together. i dont think you needed to explain why they do that. its jsut funny in my opinnion

You are right Pum, it is an interesting situation. But I have to say it is also awesome to know why things happen. In this case it is all about the reativity of the elements involved. Each atom has a reactivity, determined by the vacancy in the outer shell of the atom, and when combined the reactivity of the atoms changes. Also the actual chemical make up changes hence heat to hydrogen or oxygen alone cause fire, explosions what have you. But combine those atoms and you get steam after applying enough heat.
Okay Jo, just a small correction from above. Fuel does not put off oxygen, it actually puts off whats called combustible vapor. Each fuel has a different cumbustible vapor, ending in what is called flash point. The oxygen portion is separate fromt the fuel, you can actually get say wood to release its fuel vapor in a vaccum with heat applied and not get fire due to no oxygen. It is pretty awesome on slow motion video. Just thought I would through my two cents in.
I learned a lot in the Nav, just have to make sure you apply oneself. I also had to put out a lot of fires.
