Some weapons and armor have abilities unlocked the higher up the refinement ladder they go.
Every weapon has a level, ranging through 1 to 4. Pending on the weapon's level, every level of refinement will add a higher attack bonus. The actual numerical value escapes me right now...
But as for armor, it obviously increases the defensive value the armor grants

No. It actually gives Adam 5$ every time you refine something. BUT DONT TELL HIM. Reneshin has been stealing the 5$ each time to buy more cookies and support Communism.
