Post subject: A Quick Grammar Guide |
|
|
In this guide, I will be addressing some of the main grammatical problems I see in the forums. I do realize that reading is time consuming, but for your benefit and the benefit of those reading what you write, please take the time to learn this if you have not done so already.
Lesson 1:
The Difference Between "You're" and "Your"
When referring to something that belongs to someone, the possessive form is used.
Example: "That is your bike."
When saying someone is something, the contracted form of "you are" is used.
Example: "You are cool." or "You're cool."
Lesson 2:
The Difference Between the Plural and Possessive
When talking about a multiple amount of something, the plural form of the word is used.
Example: "There are four cats on the sofa."
When saying something belongs to something or someone else, the possessive form of the word is used.
Example 1 (singular): "That sofa belongs to the cat." or "That is the cat's sofa."
Example 2 (plural): "That sofa belongs to the cats." or "That is the cats' sofa."
For more specific instructions involving the use of the word "it," see Lesson 4.
Lesson 3:
The Difference Between "Then" and "Than"
When comparing things, the word "than" is used.
Example: "That shirt is less awesome than those pants."
When stating things chronologically (in relation to time), "then" may be used.
Example: "I went to the store. Then I came home."
Lesson 4:
The Difference Between "It's" and "Its"
When referring to something that belongs to something else, the possessive form is used.
Example: "That is the desk's handle." or "That is its handle."
When saying something is something else, the contracted form of "it is" may be used.
Example: "It is hot outside." or "It's hot outside."
Lesson 5
Too, Two, To, and You
When saying something is in addition to something else, use the word "too."
Example: "I want to eat ice cream too." (Hint: If you can substitute "also" for the word, too is the correct choice.)
Simply put, two is the word form of the number 2.
Example: "That coffee was $2." or "That coffee was two dollars."
"To" is used for many different purposes. Most commonly, it is used when directing something to something else. (Look! I used it there!)
Examples: "Go to the store." "Drive from here to there."
"To" is also used in the infinitive form of a verb.
Example: "I want to eat."

More to come after I think of more stuff to add. >_>
Found an error? Have comments or questions? Something missing that you would like to learn? Please post them. I'll be nice, I promise.

Looks right to me. In this case, the sofa belongs to more than one cat so the apostrophe is after the 's' in cats. _________________
